We have also seen the cost cutting solutions of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), using non-secure web access to their networks and having lowered Security standards to enable staff to work from home.
With no clear sign of when our country will be going back to some semblance of normality, we want to tell you the concerns, and the wins we have achieved with most of our clients.
Some concerns we have is a lack of security revolving around how clients connect/access the internet and ultimately their data. With a lot of end-users not knowing how security works, most lack a common understanding of how and why they need to hide their proprietary applications and files from prying eyes. As an example, workers who go to a Starbucks/McDonalds and use their Free Wifi face invisible obstacles that can cause any security team to go mad. From Man-in-the-Middle attacks to Packet-Sniffing to Evil-Twin-Attacks, no one is safe using an unsecured network. Instead, we suggest using a secure configuration and VPN approach.
Modern browsers use a form of Secure HTTP (a.k.a. HTTPS) to securely access websites, where all data transmitted and received become encrypted. Go to any banking website, and you will see the security pad-lock to the immediate left of the address bar. This indicates a secure connection to that website.
As an additional layer of security, we also suggest using a VPN. Most modern VPN’s use a security protocol called “SSL” (Secure Sockets Layer) to make connections to the internet. Once on a VPN, no one, including the website you are connecting to, will know who you are. This will also make it extremely difficult for a hacker or attacker to infiltrate your Office network and/or your proprietary data/applications since no one will know who you are online.
